ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Overview

English 1 focuses on fundamental reading, thinking and writing skills. Students read for literal and implied meanings and produce a variety of texts that develop one central idea in keeping with the conventions of Standard English.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

Read and comprehend a variety of print material;

  1. Distinguish between main ideas and supporting details;
  2. Distinguish between literal and figurative and inferential and explicit meanings;
  3. Summarize texts;
  4. Apply conventions of spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar;
  5. Generate, organize, develop and present ideas; and
  6. Write essays using a variety of methods of development

  • A college dictionary (e.g., Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary or Oxford Con-cise Dictionary).
  • Booklet of Readings Scarry, Sandra, and John Scarry.
